Showcasing Bikolano Products through Gainza Trade Fair
By: Romulo, Gimma “Chef G”

Every September of the year, Penafrancia Festival is being celebrated. During the celebration, there are a number of people from different places visit Naga to witness the grandeur of Ina. Some go here for the festivity, some for religious affairs and some for business purposes. As part of the festival, there are series of activities already in the line; Fluvial Procession, Marian Youth Congress, concerts, Traslacion, Military and Civic Parade, and the annual Bishop Gainza Trade Fair.

Bishop Francisco Gainza, initiated more than a century ago as a feature of the celebration.  Bishop Francisco Gainza PIONEERED the agricultural and industrial fair in Bikol in 1875. Believes that the promotion of entrepreneurship will help boost the quality of life of the people. The said trade fair and exhibit was named after him because he was the one who brought it here in the heart of Naga.

The said fair needs student volunteers from different schools here in Naga who will participate and  share efforts to the success of the exhibit. As part of the subject, we were told to participate, and we did volunteer in the said event. We registered and then there were series of orientations about the fair. The orientations were about the different areas of responsibility, the schedule assignment and other concerns.
Last year’s Gainza Trade fair was held at SM City Naga, but this year it had a twist, it was located in front of Veterans Bank. The location had a significance because since it is located near the “centro” it may encourage lots of customers to visit the event and to buy such products. Some may not buy, but atleast they were able to see different products that are being offered and may give them the idea of creating their own. Applying the principles of Marketing, you have to consider the location in creating a business, the more convenient the location, the more prospected buyers, the higher the income.
In the exhibit, there were 80 stalls that joined. There was also a fee being paid, Php5 for the entrance and Php10 for the entrance with a raffle ticket. For the stalls, there are rental fees, if you are from Naga, you have to pay Php10, 000 and if you are from outside Naga City, you are to pay Php15, 000. There are assorted line of products being offered in the fair; accessories, t-shirts, souvenirs, footwear, delicacies, furniture products and many more. You can also find different works or art there and also products of imagination of those people who created such things. They came from different places to promote of what they have. The fair is open for all businesses, as long as their products help in the betterment of the environment, eco-friendly products.

For Bikolnon products, they just prove that Bicol is rich in culture and that they can be competitive as others. For a positive view, it may be recognized world class and may have the chance to import products to different areas of the world if supported by the government and other sectors.
Relating it to tourism, having Gainza Trade Fair in one of their events, there are lots of tourists who go and visit Naga for different purposes, by that, we are able to promote our products, not just that, we are also able to enrich the culture we have, nurture it more and showcase it to the world. In addition, having lots of tourists will also promote the different attractions here in Naga City that will make travellers go back or stay for more. It will add to the promotion of the place and will increase the tourism activities in the place. Having this such kind of fair will encourage people to visit Naga.

In the trade fair, it is not just only about selling products, but it also offers training to the public. For us tourism students, it is big help because it adds additional knowledge and gives us the chance to be more ready and practiced to the field we are going to be engaged when we have our profession in the future. The said event is a sort of training for the students who volunteered themselves in the said fair.
I hope that in the next years to come, Naga City Government will also think of additional activities that will also help promote the attractions and culture of Bicol. Moreover, they will support the activities that will increase the promotion of the place.

What's summer like in the Philippines.

by:
Remjee France G. Yanto

Maybe many of you are wondering how Filipinos and tourists celebrate summer in the Philippines most especially because it is a perfect time to relax, unwind and freshen up.

Well, it is not new to learn that the temperature in the Philippines is hot especially from early noon til sunset. In fact, this kind of heat does not only apply during summer. May it be or not, the country is still experiencing this sultry climate. Maybe, for some foreigners particularly Americans and Europeans, that's one big factor they come and choose to stay in the Philippines for vacation  considering the humidity in their continents.

Anyway, the Philippine climate is only one of the many grounds why many love to celebrate their vacation in the country. Aside from that, Filipinos are known to be happy people. It is not a secret that the Philippines is a calamity prone area. In spite of the tough dilemmas Filipinos are enduring, they still get to smile and laugh which is one good attitude everyone would love. They just stop for a moment and give way for solitude yet after a while, they forget everything and start anew and hope for the better.

Smiling is contagious, free, and soothing. Smile a lot.

What was mentioned above was just a sneak peek of what the Philippines have for "bakasyonistas". Be ready for this loop of places and sceneries that gives definite reasons why "IT'S MORE FUN IN THE PHILIPPINES".

Nagueños Smile by Jeda De Veyra

I got this image from the web page of Naga City.

Naga City is the heart of Bicol that what they always say. When you go to down town you can see people smiling everywhere as if they don’t have problems.  Naguenos are happy people they give smiles for free, unlike foreign people. I had talked to some foreign tourist when I was still on my on the job training in one of the hotels down town. I asked them how was their staying here in Naga City they said that they love the people here, they always smile and wave especially kids. One day, I was buying food near at my boarding house I saw an African American guy with his wife waiting for a tricycle, he was so happy because kids playing in the streets said hi and smiled to him, As simple as that foreign people fell in love in this city.  So if you want to experience the love for naguenos feel free to visit Naga City.

Hero Reminiscing:Who is Jose Rizal?

by: Regine Bernadette C. Echano
#2

I remember a topic wherein our great professor taught us again about Rizal on his 151st birth Anniversary June 19, 2012 on the four corners of our classroom for 1 and a half hours. She taught us on how to deal and what to answer with a tourist asking "Who is Jose Rizal"? and this is what I learned.

Jose Protacio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda is the Philippines national hero. (It's our country and I am proud to be one.) He was born on June 19, 1861 in the town of Calamba, Laguna. Even if he's not the hero type like Spiderman, Superman or the Avengers, he become the hero of our native land. Las Islas Filipinas was its former name, named by Roy Lopez Villalobos in honor of Philip II of Spain after Ferdinand Magellan claimed the island for Spain. (You remember him? the one Lapu-Lapu killed in Mactan?) Anyway, going back to our Hero, he just celebrated his 151st years last June 19, 2012. He was only 35 years old when he was executed, yet he experienced a lot on his age. He shows complete courage, using his power of intelligence rather than using violence in fighting Spanish ruler.

He was also a loved child and the only son of the family? He loves his mother so much as well as his sisters. When he was a child he was an artist, draws sketches and paints with his heart. Rizal was a fast learner and considered a genius one, that's why a lot of women are fascinated and love Rizal because of his witty intelligence. He gives so much respect with women, but he is "not a playboy" (guys, you should not use that word to describe Rizal, it’s a big no no!) He just wants to care with those women, like his care towards his mother. I'm just stating the facts to clear his image, no hurt feelings ok?

Have you ever visited some of Rizal's historical sites? Did you know that the first ever Rizal monument ever built in the Philippines is in Daet, Camarines Norte? (That’s our home town and I'm proud to promote it =)...

Going back for the second time,...When you visit his home in Calamba, Laguna, you'll see that his house was freshly painted in green, removing its traditional look. Why? There's an idea why they changed it. They say that the name "Rizal" symbolizes spring time or green pasture. But I certainly still love the old one since it preserves its historical value. Anyway, there are a lot of historical sites to visit in the Philippines. It becomes a must that every municipality in each part of the Philippines should have a monument of Rizal. Later on, it becomes a tourist spot on every destination in the Philippines and even in the other country. A lot of landmarks are also being preserved because it becomes a part of his life, like the hotels he stayed while he is traveling and expanding his knowledge on every parts of the world.

He learned 22 major languages to 100 local languages. He become a scientist and discover new species, becomes a doctor that specializes in ophthalmology to cure his mother's Katarata. He also become an anthropologist, biologist, businessman, writer of his famous novel agains the Friars, "Noli Me Tangere" and "El Filibusterismo", a carpenter and an engineer who made his own water system and becomes a teacher while he's on exile. He made himself his last poem named "Mi Ultimo Adios" that means "His Last Farewell" and has been translated into at least 38 languages into different parts of the world.

He died on December 30, 1896 at Bagumbayan, Manila that become Luneta Park that's being monitored, beautifies and protected by the government to maintain the cleanliness and security of the park because it is one of the major destination of the Philippines. We must remember his productive life of heroism and being patriotic towards his love to our native land because he saw the oppression of the Filipino natives who become the slaves of the Spaniard colonialism that give him the urge to fight because "They are, and We are" the true owners of the humble island of the Philippines.

Now, you know the right answer to the question: Who is Jose Rizal? Even though it’s lengthy to memorize, it's just a matter of knowing and understanding our history and pride, and to share our history and culture that creates our own identity as True Filipinos.
